Greatest Equalizer of our Times – #RemoteWork

One of the biggest benefits of remote work is how it can serve as the great equaliser across global workforces. Our current world is riddled with biases and blatant discrimination, as well as unequal priveleges. A person’s race, gender, religion, place of birth, medical status can either provide unfair advantages or hinder by creating barriers to them getting or maintaining a job.

A study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago discovered that traditionally attractive people, both men and women, earn higher incomes, whereas less attractive people earn lower incomes. Another study found that attractive people are less likely to receive a job offer for low-paying roles or perceived to be beneath them. This is just one example of how biases and discrimination affect the job market.

Remote work tackles this issue by creating a space where employees get paid fair, equal wages for their work regardless of age, gender, location, or any other factor. The decrease in proximity between co-workers, managers, and colleagues in a physical space  reduces unnecessary biases, leaving an employee’s work as the singular thing they are judged based on. Besides a fair wage, remote work also offers employees the dignity of working safely at home and a feeling of equity from knowing they are being treated exactly the same as everyone else.

Another common barrier in forming a diverse workforce at present is the argument that not enough diverse candidates were qualified in the market. Remote work eradicates this matter by opening up the possibility of hiring an employee from across the globe, making it impossible to not find a skilled employee who is diverse and can bring a fresh perspective to the table.
